Honoring a South Street Tradition
|
SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 2024: NOON - 3:00 PM
South Street Headhouse District Office, 407 South Street
For over 50 years Abe Kravitz sold fruit and vegetables from a stand at 4th and South Street. He was known for his horseradish which he made on a device he created after he returned from serving in WWI.
When I moved to South Street I was amazed that there were fancy cars lined up for days before Passover. People came bringing their own jars to fill with fresh ground horseradish for the holiday. This had been a family tradition for generations, and they came every year.
Abe's famous horseradish grinder is now owned by Isaiah Zagar. On Sunday April 21, from noon to 3PM, there will be a reenactment of this tradition on the original machine at the South Street Headhouse District Office 407 South Street as part of the "South Street History Project."
Please bring your own jar!
